Al Janoub: Qatar’s Giant Vagina Shaped Football Stadium

“Al Janoub” is a football stadium built for the 2022 FIFA World Cup. The stadium is located 20km south of Doha in Al Wakrah. The stadium includes a football stadium as well as an athletics track.

The capacity of the stadium is 40,000. The capacity is expected to be reduced to 20,000 and become the official seat of the football club Al-Wakrah SC after the world cup.

Due to Qatar’s hot and arid climate, the stadium is built with a cooling system to prevents users from overheating, capable of cooling the spectator areas to 18°C and the field of play to 20°C.

The stadium is designed by the late great British-Iraqi architect, Dame Zaha Hadid. To Hadid’s displeasure, the design has been humorously dubbed by many across the internet as the ” Vagina stadium” shape for its unique curves and upper openings.

In fact, when Hadid’s plans were first released in 2013, Hadid was furious stating, “It’s really embarrassing they come up with nonsense stuff like this. What are they saying? Everything with a hole in it is a vagina? That’s ridiculous.”

What do you think of the Al Janoub “Vagina” stadium?
